How to play Typing Speed

Typing Speed gives you a short passage and sixty seconds. Click the text and start typing; the clock starts on your first keystroke. Correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red, and your words per minute, accuracy, time left and progress update live above the passage.

The test ends when the minute is up or when you reach the end of the passage. Speed is counted in standard five-character words, using only characters typed correctly in the right place. Press Restart to retry the same text, or New passage for a different one from a set of twenty.

Tips

• ▸Fix mistakes with Backspace straight away. Characters are checked position by position, so one skipped letter makes everything after it count as wrong.
• ▸Watch the accuracy box: it turns amber below 95% and red below 85%. If it drops, slow down a little, because only correct characters add to your speed.
• ▸Read a word or two ahead of the highlighted letter instead of looking at your hands.
• ▸Capitals, commas and full stops are part of the passage, so keep a finger ready for Shift and don't skip punctuation.

Typing Speed FAQ

How is words per minute worked out?

Every five correct characters, including spaces and punctuation, count as one word. If you finish the passage before the minute is up, your speed is based on the time you actually used.

Can I paste text or jump ahead?

No. Pasting is blocked and the arrow keys are disabled inside the passage, so every character has to be typed in order.

Do I need a physical keyboard?

Yes. The test is built for a real keyboard, so use a computer or a tablet with a keyboard attached. Your best result is saved in your browser.
