How to play Reversi
Reversi starts with two black and two white discs in the centre of an 8x8 board, and Black moves first. Place a disc so that one or more straight lines of your opponent's discs are trapped between it and another of yours, in any direction. Every trapped disc flips to your colour. Dots mark the squares where you can legally play.
If you have no legal move, your turn is passed automatically. The game ends when neither player can move, usually with a full board, and whoever has more discs wins; equal counts are a draw. Both disc counts are shown above the board. Play Black against the AI, take turns with a friend on one device, or play online with a room code.
Tips
- ▸Avoid squares diagonally next to an empty corner. They often hand the corner to your opponent.
- ▸Don't grab lots of discs early. Fewer discs in the opening often means more choices later.
- ▸Prefer moves that leave your opponent only bad options, even if they flip fewer discs.
- ▸Save the big flips for the last few moves, when every disc counts.
Reversi FAQ
- Why are corners so important in Reversi?
- A disc in a corner can't be outflanked, so it can never be flipped. Corners also help you build edges that stay safe.
- What happens if I can't move?
- Your turn is skipped and a message shows who passed. If neither side can move, the game ends.
- How strong is the Reversi AI?
- It looks four moves ahead, prizes corners and edges and counts discs near the end. Beating it takes real positional play.
- Can I play Reversi with a friend online?
- Yes. Create a room and share the code or invite link. Who plays Black and moves first swaps each game.
