How to play Checkers
Checkers is played on the dark squares of an 8x8 board with 12 pieces each. Red starts at the bottom and moves first. Pieces move one square diagonally forward. Capture by jumping over an opponent's piece into the empty square beyond, and keep jumping if you can. Captures are compulsory, and the pieces that can move are outlined.
A piece that reaches the far row becomes a king and can move and capture backwards too. Click a piece, then a highlighted square; for a multi-jump, click the final landing square. You win when your opponent has no legal move. After 40 moves each without a capture or crowning, it's a draw. Play the AI, a friend on one device, or online.
Tips
- ▸Keep your back row at home as long as you can. While it's filled, your opponent can't crown a king.
- ▸Control the centre. Central pieces have more options and are harder to trap.
- ▸Use forced captures: offer a piece so your opponent's compulsory jump sets up a double jump for you.
- ▸Move in pairs. A piece with a friend right behind it can't be jumped from the front.
Checkers FAQ
- Are captures compulsory in this Checkers game?
- Yes. If any piece can jump, you must capture and finish the whole jump sequence. The status line tells you when a capture is required.
- How good is the Checkers AI?
- It looks five turns ahead, six once 12 or fewer pieces remain, and weighs material, kings and position. It punishes careless moves.
- Can I play Checkers with a friend online?
- Yes. Create a room and share the code or invite link. The board turns so your pieces are always at the bottom.
